DHPSNY’s Planning & Assessment Services consist of Archival Needs Assessments, Preservation Surveys, Condition Surveys, and Strategic Planning Assistance. In each instance, our services aim to improve adherence to best practices and are tailored to an organization’s unique circumstances.
A few weeks ago, we shared resources focused on creating workplaces that actively support diversity and inclusion. Today, we’re sharing resources focused on the discussion of race, diversity, and inclusion in the field of conservation, specifically through the American Institute of Conservation (AIC). Conservation is an important part of archival work, as it supports the stabilization of objects and materials for the long term.
The DHPSNY team is excited to continue to offer Planning & Assessment Services in 2021, having spent time in 2020 perfecting our approach to a safe, virtual delivery. This month, DHPSNY shared an official press release about the program's five-year extension. In the announcement, State Archivist Tom Ruller commented on the good news, stressing DHPSNY's important role in helping to ensure "collecting institutions across the state continue to have access to the tools they need to preserve and make available the essential materials that tell the story of New York and its people."
To continue our focus on Black History Month, we are building on our last blog post about educational resources by highlighting some of the unique Black History collections and projects throughout New York State. From developing curriculums to creating digital humanities projects and anything in between, public archival materials celebrate all aspects of Black History. Keep in mind that the following are only a small fraction of collections out there worth exploring.

Part of a history educator's responsibility is to ensure that their students see themselves reflected in history classes. As we begin Black History Month, we wanted to share a selection of education resources that aim to ensure that Black History is understood as American History, and to increase the potential for students of color to be reflected in that history. The New York State Archives Partnership Trust has produced a number of online educator guides building on historical resources held by the State Archives and collecting institutions across the State.
