When we pulled up to the Oswego County Historical Society's Richardson Bates House Museum in 2018 to conduct an Archival Needs Assessment, we were struck by the majesty of the building and, upon entering, the well-displayed period rooms and exhibits of the history of the Richardson Bates family and Oswego region. From our first meeting, the enthusiasm of the board and staff was palpable, and their dedication to preserving the space, as well as seeking new solutions for ongoing care of the collections, was impressive.

In January, we invited you to take Part I of our Documentation Planning Project, Collections & Community: A Survey for New York State Collecting Institutions. We’re asking for your help in the next phase of the project—collecting and analyzing Mission Statements and Collection Development Policies from collecting institutions across the state.
In 2017, we conducted a Preservation Survey for the Hudson River Maritime Museum (HRMM) and were thoroughly impressed by their dedication to preserving the Hudson River's maritime history. It was no surprise that HRRM was awarded a New York State Archives Documentary Heritage Program Grant this past May to support their work.
We're excited to announce a new round of DHPSNY's Mentorship Program! The current application is for cohorts that will meet from September 2019 – February 2020. Applications for this round must be submitted by July 19, 2019. The DHPSNY Mentorship Program is designed to create a community that supports those who care for the unique library research materials and archival collections in the state of New York, including volunteers, interns, students, and both emerging and seasoned professionals.
Do you work with an organization dedicated to preserving NY State’s history such as a museum, library, archive, or historical society? Join our community of the volunteers, professionals, students, and experts to ask questions, share events, learn about cutting edge techniques, and engage with like-minded people. This is where the people behind the vast network of organizations that safeguard New York’s records can unite to support each other, share learnings, and develop a network of peers.
We concluded our Spring 2019 Planning & Assessment Services Application Round earlier this season, and the response was amazing! From a competitive pool of applicants, our field reviewers selected 20 organizations to receive free Archival Needs Assessments, Preservation Surveys, and Strategic Planning assistance.
